New cancer risk gene found

A new breast cancer risk gene has been discovered which explains the early-onset breast cancer in some multiple-case breast cancer families.
The international team of investigators led by the University of Melbourne Australia, identified rare mutations in the RINT1 gene to increase risk of breast and many other cancers.

Anti-leukaemia drug in trials

Eight Australians are diagnosed with a form of leukaemia every day. While there are treatments, many of these don’t work on all people or produce such serious side effects that the patient has to be withdrawn from treatment.

Nobel prize 2013

Three biologists have won the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for solving the mystery of how cells control transport of molecules. The winners are (from left) James E. Rothman, Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof.
