Researchers have designed a new drug that could protect against epidemic and pandemic flu virus strains, which kill approximately 500,000 people each year. In order to infect cells, flu viruses bind onto sugars on the cell surface and they then remove these sugars to spread. The new drug works by preventing the virus from removing sugars, stopping it from infecting more cells.
